# Is the Beach Open to Everyone in Flagler country?

And Why Are There “Do Not Disturb Vegetation” Signs?**

If you’ve just arrived in Palm Coast and taken your first walk along the Atlantic, you may have wondered two things:

1. “Is this beach public?”
2. “Why are there signs telling me not to disturb the vegetation?”

Both are great questions — and the answers say a lot about what kind of community this is.

## Is the Beach Open to Everyone?

Yes — Florida beaches are public.

Under Florida law, the sandy beach below the high tide line is open to everyone. In Palm Coast and Flagler County, residents and visitors alike can enjoy the shoreline.

However, access points are limited.

Unlike some major tourist beach towns, Palm Coast doesn’t have a boardwalk every few blocks. Access is mostly through designated walkovers and parking areas like:

- Jungle Hut Park
- Varn Park
- Old Salt Park
- Beverly Beach access points
- Flagler Beach (just south)

That limited access is intentional. It helps reduce overcrowding and protects the dunes.

So yes —

## **Why Can’t You Pull the Vegetation?**

Those sea oats and dune grasses aren’t just plants.

They are protection.

Palm Coast sits along a fragile barrier island system. The dunes act as a natural defense against:

- Storm surge
- Coastal erosion
- Hurricane damage
- Sand loss

The roots of sea oats hold the dunes together. If vegetation is removed — even casually — the dune weakens.

Once dunes erode, homes, roads, and infrastructure become vulnerable.

That’s why you’ll see signs saying:
“Do Not Disturb Vegetation”
“Stay Off the Dunes”
“No Removal of Sea Oats”

It’s not about restriction.

It’s about protection.

### The beach is open to everyone.

But you enter respectfully, through marked access paths.
