Flagler Schools is preparing for a major leadership transition in 2026, with two local professionals stepping into key executive positions that will shape the districtโs future operations and workforce development.
During a School Board meeting in Bunnell, Superintendent LaShakia Moore recommended the appointment of Joshua Walker as Chief of Human Resources and Lauren Johnston as Chief of Operations.
Both leaders are graduates of Matanzas High School and represent what many are calling a โhomegrown leadership pipelineโ within Flagler County Schools.
Joshua Walker currently serves as Human Resources Supervisor and has spent more than a decade working within Flagler Schools. His experience includes supporting staff development, recruitment, and personnel standards.
Lauren Johnston returns to the district after serving in leadership roles with the City of Palm Coast, including Assistant City Manager and Acting City Manager. She was part of the first graduating class of Matanzas High School in 2008.
Both Walker and Johnston also have children currently enrolled in Flagler Schools, reinforcing their personal connection to the district.
The appointments come as two long-time administrators prepare for retirement:
Both will officially retire on July 1, 2026.
To ensure continuity, Walker and Johnston will begin their new roles on April 20, working alongside their predecessors during a 10-week transition period.
According to Superintendent LaShakia Moore, the decision reflects both experience and community connection:
โThey understand where weโve been and have the vision to take us where we need to go.โ
Walker will focus on strengthening recruitment and support for educators, while Johnston will oversee facilities, transportation, and operational infrastructure across the district.
