Motorsports fans in Northeast Florida could soon have a major new destination within driving distance of Flagler County.

A proposed 440-acre motorsports complex in Palatka is moving forward after receiving the government approvals needed to advance the project. Putnam County natives Scott Lagasse Sr. and Scott Lagasse Jr. are behind the development, which is expected to be built in phases at a projected cost of approximately $200 million over 10 years.

The property sits just west of the Palatka Municipal Airport, between Reid Street and County Road 309C. Plans center around a multi-turn road course for cars along with a smaller go-kart track, but the vision extends well beyond race day.

Plans discussed for the property have included garages and vehicle storage, driver-training facilities, a clubhouse and museum, meeting and office space, RV accommodations and eventually a hotel. The track could also host car shows, music festivals and other events.

For drivers, the facility could provide everything from high-performance track days and professional driver training to programs for younger drivers. Plans have also included defensive-driving instruction for teens and specialized training opportunities for law enforcement and first responders.

For everyone else, a project of this size could create another regional destination drawing visitors from across Florida and beyond. Race weekends, car clubs, karting, special events and motorsports tourism could bring spectators and families into the area while creating demand for hotels, restaurants and other nearby businesses.

The location was deliberately selected beside the Palatka Municipal Airport and near existing industrial uses and gun ranges — an unusual combination that the developers say helps address one of the biggest challenges facing motorsports facilities: noise conflicts with surrounding neighborhoods.

The Lagasse family has been considering a motorsports facility for years, but the Palatka project has now moved well beyond the dream stage. With approvals progressing, attention turns toward designing the racetrack itself and moving toward construction.

For Flagler County's racing fans, car enthusiasts and families looking for something different to do, this is one development worth watching.
