Season 2 – Episode 1: The Empty Current
The ocean stretched farther than Sammy had ever noticed before. It had always been wide. Always mysterious. Always full of movement and life. But now… it felt different.
Now it felt empty.
Sammy rested gently on the soft ocean floor, his flippers tucked beneath him. Above, the water shimmered in shifting ribbons of light. Coral branches swayed like slow dancers. Tiny silver fish flickered past in nervous schools.
Everything was alive. Everything was moving. Yet inside him, something had grown still. He watched a trail of bubbles rise toward the surface. They drifted upward without hesitation, without doubt, carried by currents that knew exactly where they were going. Sammy wished he could feel that certain.
“It’s hard to swim alone,” he whispered, his voice dissolving into the quiet blue. He remembered the way Luna used to glide ahead, then circle back in playful loops. The way her laughter seemed to ripple through the water like sunlight. “She always knew where we were going… even when we didn’t,” he said softly. And then he smiled to himself.
“And even when she didn’t know… she made me believe we would be okay.” He lowered his head, tracing patterns in the sand with the tip of his flipper.
The memories came like waves. Moonlit songs. Storm-tossed nights. The glowing lagoon. The ancient ruins. The long migration toward the shore.
Each memory felt like a shell he carried now. Beautiful… but heavy. “I don’t feel brave without her,” he admitted.
The ocean seemed louder these days. The shadows deeper. The distances longer.
Everything felt bigger. Everything felt uncertain. A small red crab scuttled across the sand, pausing to look up at him with curious eyes. Sammy gave it a faint smile, then turned his gaze toward the endless horizon.
“I hope she’s safe,” he murmured.
“I hope she knows I believe in her.”
A tear slipped free and drifted away like a tiny pearl. For a long moment, Sammy simply listened.
To the distant hum of the sea.
To the rhythm of his own breathing.
To the quiet space where Luna’s voice used to be.
Then, far in the distance… a shadow moved. It was only a shape at first. A slow swimmer gliding between beams of light. Sammy’s heart leapt.
“Luna?” he called softly, rising from the sand. The figure did not answer. It swam closer… then veered away into deeper water.
Sammy watched until it disappeared. His heart sank — but something else stirred in its place.
A question.
“What if the sea isn’t taking her away from me…” he wondered.
“What if it’s asking me to find my own way?”
He looked out into the vast blue again.
This time, not with fear.
But with thought.
With possibility.
With the faintest spark of courage beginning to glow where loneliness had been. “Maybe,” Sammy said quietly,
“this empty current isn’t meant to carry me backward…
maybe it’s meant to carry me forward.”
And slowly, gently, he pushed off the ocean floor and began to swim.
Not because he knew where he was going.
But because he was ready to find out.
