Residential customers who use at least 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month will see an additional **$12.02 on their monthly bills**, lasting through the end of 2025. That's 144.22 you can expect to budget for 2025 for Florida Power & Light.

This charge helps Florida Power & Light (FPL) cover the significant costs of restoring power after the intense hurricane season we just experienced. It also allows FPL to rebuild its $150 million storm reserve fund, ensuring they’re prepared for future storms.

Hurricane Milton, the most destructive of the three hurricanes this year, knocked out power to nearly **1.3 million FPL customers**. FPL mobilized thousands of workers before each major storm to get power back on as quickly as possible.

“We know how much our customers rely on us, and we worked relentlessly to restore power after each hurricane,” said Armando Pimentel, FPL President and CEO. “We’re mindful that these restoration costs are paid by our customers, which is why we continue investing in storm-hardening and smart grid technology. These investments are already helping us reduce outages, restore power faster, and lower restoration costs.”

The costs from this year’s hurricane season are substantial. FPL is covering $1.2 billion in storm recovery expenses, with Hurricane Milton accounting for the majority at **$811.1 million**, followed by **$157.8 million** for Hurricane Helene and **$113.5 million** for Hurricane Debby.

Here’s some good news: the surcharge is **interim** and subject to refund with interest. If the final review shows that actual recovery costs were lower than expected, customers could see adjustments.

While this surcharge might feel like an extra burden, FPL emphasizes that proactive investments in storm preparation, like hardening infrastructure and deploying smart grid technology, are already making a difference. These efforts reduce the impact of outages, speed up recovery, and get our lives back to normal faster—whether it’s sending kids back to school or getting businesses back up and running.

Stay prepared, Floridians. FPL’s commitment to resilience and readiness is a critical part of weathering Florida’s stormy seasons together.
