Gov. Ron DeSantis called on the legislature to permanently ban mRNA vaccine mandates in Florida

On March 13, 2025, Gov. Ron DeSantis made a bold push for what he’s calling “Patient Freedom in Healthcare,” a move that will strengthen Florida’s stance against vaccine mandates and federal health recommendations.
With a determined tone, Gov. DeSantis laid out three key objectives.
First, he urged the federal government to stop recommending COVID-19 vaccines for children, pointing to studies that question their effectiveness for young people.
Second, he called on the legislature to permanently ban mRNA vaccine mandates in Florida. While such a law is already in place, it’s set to expire in June 2025—but DeSantis is pushing to ensure it never returns.
Finally, he advocated for stronger patient rights by prohibiting doctors from denying care based on vaccination status, reinforcing protections for those who have chosen to forgo the shot.
Joining him in support were Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, First Lady Casey DeSantis, and a local college football player who shared his harrowing experience of falling seriously ill after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.
For those who oppose vaccine mandates, the announcement marks a significant victory in medical freedom. However, for supporters of widespread vaccination efforts, the governor’s stance is yet another blow in the ongoing battle over public health policy.

mRNA vaccine vs Non-mRNA?
The main difference between mRNA vaccines and non-mRNA vaccines is how they trigger an immune response.
-mRNA vaccines use laboratory-created mRNA to teach cells to make proteins that trigger an immune response. This immune response produces antibodies that help protect against future illness,
- Non-mRNA vaccines use a weakened or inactivated germ to trigger an immune response
