Flagler County Mosquito Control Offers Tips For Prevention

Michael from Flagler County Mosquito Control has a powerful message and a big 'ask' from us all.

“We’ve been protecting this community for 73 years and the most dangerous threat today, Michael explained, comes from what are known as container mosquitoes—mosquitoes that breed in small, hidden collections of water. These insects can lay eggs in as little as a quarter-inch of standing water, often in everyday items found in residential yards.

Fight the Bite: Mosquito Awarness and Prevention Tips

Mosquitoes aren’t just a summertime nuisance—they’re considered the deadliest animal on Earth. Responsible for spreading dangerous diseases like West Nile virus, Zika, and dengue fever, mosquitoes pose a serious health risk. But the good news is, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your neighborhood with just a few simple actions.

Why Mosquito Control Matters

Mosquitoes can breed in the smallest amounts of standing water—just a quarter inch is enough for them to lay eggs. These container mosquitoes often thrive right in our backyards, especially in overlooked places like buckets, birdbaths, and tarps.

Top Tips to Prevent Mosquito Breeding:

  • Dump Standing Water Regularly
Check items like flowerpot saucers, pet bowls, and birdbaths. Refresh water at least every three days.

  • Flip or Cover Items That Can Collect Water
Kiddie pools, trash can lids, and wheelbarrows should be turned over or stored under cover when not in use.

  • Tighten or Remove Tarps
Water can collect in the folds of tarps covering boats, firewood, or equipment. Keep them tight or store them away when possible.

  • Clean Out Gutters
Clogged gutters hold water that becomes a perfect mosquito breeding ground. Clear them regularly.

  • Check and Maintain Screens
Make sure window and door screens are intact to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
